SWhat types of bathroom

A bathroom vanity is a general term used to refer to the countertop on or around a sink, cabinets below a bathroom sink, mirror(s) and the sink itself. They range from simple, monochromatic and elegant to elaborate and multi-coloured designs. Vanities are a simple yet effective way to furnish and decorate a room without going overboard. The choice of a bathroom vanity lies solely on one’s preference but can be determined by a number of factors. They are also of different types, shapes, colors, and textures.

Classification of bathroom vanities.

They can be classified according to style, type, and texture.

  • Free standing vanities

This is one which is not attached to the wall, that is, can support itself in a room. It is used together with a pedestal sink (a sink whose drainage goes through the floor instead of through the wall thus ‘standing’). It is appropriate for small bathrooms and yet has ample storage space. It is also high in aesthetic value and cheap to install.

  • Vessel sink vanity

This is used alongside the vessel sink (which looks like a bowl and rest on the countertop). It is somewhat expensive to install (compared to all other types), space consuming and is limited to the type and size of the bathroom.

  • Wall mounted vanity.

Unlike the free standing vanity, this one is attached to the wall. It is applied where there is a corresponding wall mounted sink. It is relatively easy to install. Its downside, however, is that it is not durable and  is susceptible to chips and cracks.

  • Cabinet style vanity

This incorporates the furniture aspect of furnishing to the bathroom. It involves a wide range of materials and styles, from expensive and large to cost-friendly and small cabinets. They contain the drain pipes within them.

  • Wooden vanities

These offer a luxurious and warm feeling to a bathroom. The wood may be expensive hardwood (oak, redwood or mahogany) or cheaper softwood. The choice depends entirely on the furnishers’ budget.

  • Glass vanities.

These are made of durable, breakage and scratch resistant glass. They offer a more modern look (compared to wood) thus are preferred in public establishments such as hotels.

  • Contemporary Vanities

These may be made of other materials such as granite or plastic.

  • Antique Vanities

This type offers a more traditional feel to the bathroom. It can entail mixed textures such as wood and glass) and archaic designs to achieve this style. It requires a lot of craftsmanship and can be the most expensive style used for bathroom vanities.

Factors determining choice of bathroom vanities

  • Type of sink in the bathroom

This is probably one of the greatest determinants of the type of vanity in the bathroom. For instance, one cannot have a vessel vanity without the vessel sink. Similarly, a wall mounted vanity cannot be used with a pedestal sink.

  • Amount of space available

Some vanities are large thus the available space should be put into consideration

  • Effect desired

A glass, free-standing vanity is the most appropriate for a modern appearance while the wooden antique vanity is best for a traditional effect

  • Budget

After the type of sink, this is the most important factor to consider. Some vanities cost a lot more than others. It is therefore essential to get the highest quality at the most affordable price.

A bathroom vanity is a must-have for every bathroom due to its utility and beauty. It practically brightens up a bathroom with very little effort. The right bathroom vanity converts   your bathroom into a mini heaven.
