Wallpaper was a hit when it was introduced about a quarter century ago. However, it has been see-sawing in the popularity scale ever since. At the moment, wallpaper is a favorite for home décor but only if you know how to make it work for your home.

When it comes to the kitchen, wallpaper can transform this most intimate space in the house if placed well.

Types of wallpaper suitable for the kitchen

The kitchen is not typically the ideal room for wallpaper due to the heat and high humidity but there are varieties with the quality and style to fit in this area. The three main types are novamura, vinyl and washable wallpapers.

Novamura wallpaper

Made of foamed polythene with the texture of a fabric, it springs back if gently pressed. It is is easy to keep clean and has a long lifespan.

Vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl comes from ethylene, which is derived from natural gas. It forms the surface where the patterns and colors are printed. The wallpaper has a paperback that’s attached to the vinyl surface. These types of wallpapers are durable and resistant to wear when exposed to sunlight. They can, however, be tough to strip out since the vinyl does not get wet.

Washable wallpaper

These are quite different from vinyl wallpapers since they have a thing transparent plastic coating on pulp paper. The patterns are printed on the paper and the plastic coating makes them easy to wipe with a wet cloth.

Where to place your wallpaper

Now that you know what type of wallpaper to go for, let’s explore the different places you could it;

Inside your drawers

This is a fun way to add some unexpected stylishness to your cabinets. You can choose to have wallpaper in all the drawers or go with just a few, depending on what you like. Either way, anyone who reaches for a fork or a knife will enjoy the pretty display.

The ceiling

This is a great way to bring the whole space together and keep everything in perfect harmony. You can choose any design you want and it will still look pretty. Having a bold pattern high above everything else will immediately draw attention to the ceiling and take it away from other normal items in the kitchen.

Wallpaper for the backsplash

The backsplash is a great area to have wallpaper if you feel like wallpapering all the walls will be a little overwhelming. It is also ideal for people working with a tight budget that doesn’t allow for splurging on items. There is just enough space to display a pattern you love and still keep the theme of the kitchen intact. 3D wallpapers can even enhance the look to create the impression that the backsplash is covered with tiles.

Wallpaper comes in all flavors and you have a gamut of choices to pick from. Many people find that wallpaper is a cheap addition to their kitchen décor because they typically don’t need much of it and it is always cheaper than tiles, granite, soapstone or quartz no matter what price point you get.
